Es gehört zur Tradition der Wiener Schule, ein Faible für Jazz und Unterhaltungsmusik zu haben. Alban Bergs Kammerkonzert mag hier nur als Beispiel für diese Tendenz genannt werden, die ihre Fortsetzung auch in der Schülergeneration der Wiener Schule fand. Umso natürlicher scheint es, wenn ein gebürtiger Amerikaner wie Eugene Hartzell, der die Zwölftonkomposition beim Berg-Schüler Hans Erich Apostel erlernte, diese Neigung apostrophiert bis zur fixen Idee eines dodekaphonen Jazz. Das Horn-Trio ist ein markantes Beispiel dieses Stils. Hartzell: "Der Titel bezieht sich vor allem auf zwei Entlehnungen aus der sogenannten U-Musik, nämlich einen Boogie-Bass und ein Ragtime-Thema. Dazwischen aber geht es etwas "ernster" zu. Das Werk ist durch ein Signal gegliedert, das vom Horn am Anfang vorgetragen wird. Es besteht aus den Naturtönen c, es, f, g, a, h (klingend). Die Umkehrung (cis, ais, gis, fis, e, d) komplettiert die Zwölftonreihe und wird auch als Signal verwendet."
