John Potter

The English tenor and academic John Potter was a boy chorister at King’s College Cambridge and later an exhibitioner at Gonville and Caius. His performing career focused on contemporary and medieval vocal music, largely as part of small ensembles such as The Hilliard Ensemble, Red Byrd, and Trio Medieval. Notable recordings include the colossally successful Officium with jazz saxophonist Jan Garbarek (1993), The Dowland Project, Conductus – Music and Poetry from thirteenth-century France, and In Darkness Let Me Dwell.

Now retired, Potter is a reader emeritus at the University of York, where he ran a popular postgraduate programme in vocal studies and extended vocal techniques, and formed the ensemble York Vocal Index. His publications include Tenor: History of a Voice (Yale University Press), History of Singing and Vocal Authority (both Cambridge University Press).
