American soprano Barbara Hendricks was born in Arkansas in 1948 and studied maths and chemistry at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln before enrolling at the Juilliard School of Music, where her teachers included Jennie Tourel. She made her professional debut at Glyndebourne in 1974 in the title-role of Cavalli’s La Calisto, and was soon in demand at the world’s major houses for light lyric roles such as Susanna Le nozze di Figaro, Massenet’s Manon, Ilia (Idomeneo), Anne Trulove (The Rake’s Progress), and Sophie (Der Rosenkavalier).
