Volume 62 of the renowned series “Studien zur Wertungsforschung“Music and landscape – a topic that has occupied composers and musicians for centuries and has been taken up again and again. The most diverse aspects of landscape, from nature to city, from animal sounds to environmental noises, have been and are integrated into music and sound experiences in the most diverse ways. They are imitated, sung about, integrated or abstractly depicted. It is in the nature of things that the style and approach has changed greatly through the ages to the present day. Terms such as electroacoustics or soundscape have found their way into the subject matter. Thus, in this publication, which documents and complements the three-day interdisciplinary conference held at the University of Art and the Kunsthaus Graz in October 2016, historical aspects are contrasted with contemporary developments. The interaction of music and landscape is reflected, its development is sketched on the basis of a wide variety of contributions and main topics, and new paths are presented. Sound art, sound ecology, the inclusion of space and spaciousness to sound installations, soundwalks and sound art projects in different parts of the world are being considered. Collaborations and crossover constellations of the modern era naturally include media and internet-based implementations. As different as the topics of the lecturers and speakers at the conference were, as multifaceted is the combination of the elaborated texts and essays in this new volume of the series Studien zur Wertungsforschung.
